The order that saves chemicals
- Alkalinity first — it buffers pH, so fix it before chasing pH.
- Then pH — 7.2–7.8, ideally around 7.5.
- Calcium and stabilizer — slow-moving; adjust a few times a season.
- Chlorine last — dosed to match your stabilizer level, and checked most often.
Test free chlorine and pH two or three times a week in season (daily for hot tubs in use), and everything else every week or two. A drop-based test kit is more reliable than strips for FC, CYA and calcium.
